A Tribute To An Old Friend...

As we review our lives, we can attribute many events to making changes in our lives, but seldom does one single animal have such a life changing contribution. This is the case for myself, Kay Pate, when Bond Snippet came home with me from the Bond Miniature Horse Farm in Georgia.
I can remember back to February, 1985, and seeing Snippet in that large barn of some 100+ horses. Mr. Bond and I finally negotiated a deal and we loaded Snippet in the trailer and headed to Longview, TX and our home. Soon after I sold my World Champion Quarter Horse Gelding and set out to fit Snippet for the show ring. We made out debut a short 90 days later with a circuit of four AMHA shows that concluded at the Julep Cup in Lexington, KY. Snippet was named Supreme Halter Horse and came home UNDEFEATED! I was hooked. Snippet and I had a bond that would truly last a lifetime. Snippet was a joy to show as he wanted to win as much as I did. When it came down to Supreme Champion, he could reach deep in his heart and find another expression to entice the judge for the Championship. The pride of ownership and the joy of showing Snippet myself was worth all of the hard work and then some.

I was so proud to have shown Snippet at all those shows myself. I was never a true professional trainer, but Snippet made showing him so easy. In less than 2 years of showing, Snippet became the "WINNINGEST HALTER STALLION" ever in the history of AMHA! Snippets first filly, Roys Toy Snippets Starlette, was named 1987 World Champion Weanling Filly. What fun it was to show her! I sold her and purchased her back and am awaiting her 2008 foal. Snippet and Starlette were the beginning of a business that became the pride of breeding, foaling, and showing Bond Snippet sons and daughters.
Breyer Animal Creations, who have the most popular line of model horses in the world, produced a model of Bond Snippet several years ago and he is now on the collectible lists. It was certainly an honor for him to be the first miniature stallion to ever be done by Breyer. Conversations, letters, and photos were exchanged to produce the likeness of Snippet with his unique color pattern and being almost symetrical on both sides. After all, Snippet is my perfect horse!
It was a very sad day when it came to say Good Bye to my old friend and companion of so many years. For almost 23 years, he has brought so many good and happy times to our farm. Two businesses came about through Snippet...Modern Miniatures (formerly Roys Toy Ranch) and K Groom and Tack (which was the largest mini tack manufacturer in the World). As I look at my farm, I know that Snippet contributed more to it than any one person or horse. I remember if Snippet pawed or kicked the fence, we thought it was OK, he paid for it after all!
Not many people get to own a horse for this many years. Snippet was certainly a gift from Heaven. I have two mares in foal to Snippet for 2008. Snippet was cremated and is still with me at the farm. I believe God gives you one truly great horse in a lifetime who surpasses all the others...Bond Snippet was definitely my one red rose.
